What it is for

Money paid to the beneficiary on death. For a family with dependants in two countries, this is often the piece that is quietly missing.

What a sensible policy would cover

  • ✓A death benefit sized to the family's actual commitments over a defined horizon
  • ✓A named beneficiary, formally designated and confirmed in writing
  • ✓A policy that stays in force through a move between jurisdictions
  • ✓Clear ownership of the cash value if the plan is a savings product rather than pure protection

How the structure comes in

Insurers sell the same category in several structural forms. The form matters more than the marketing name, because it decides how the claim is paid and what you have to do yourself.

Term life

Pure protection for a set term. A straightforward way to cover a specific commitment like a mortgage or a child's education.

What decides eligibility

  • Beneficiary designation is formal: the policyholder names the beneficiary, and the insured's consent is required if the policyholder is not the insured.
  • Premium must be paid from an account belonging to the policyholder. An intermediary may not collect premium from the client's account, and the payer's identity has to match.
  • Premium paid from outside mainland China raises cross-border remittance questions — individual foreign exchange rules cap the convenience quota and restrict certain insurance purchases.

What usually goes wrong

  • If the policy is savings-based, its cash value and growth are not guaranteed in the way a fixed deposit is. Do not describe any product as risk-free.

Myths that cause claims to fail

Each category carries a few assumptions that only turn out to be wrong at claim time. Read the right-hand column before you sign.

What people assumeWhat the contract actually says
Naming someone in my will is enough. The beneficiary must be formally designated in the policy. A will alone may not bind the proceeds, and can send them through the estate route, which delays payment.
The payout is tax-free everywhere.Tax treatment follows your tax residency. A payout to a non-resident beneficiary can be reported under automatic exchange rules — confirm before you rely on it.
I can pay the premium from any account.Premium must come from an account in the policyholder's own name. An intermediary is not permitted to collect premium from a client's account.
